While gifts play an essential role in strengthening our ties with our loved ones, we often tend to forget that the biggest gift we can ever present someone with is through our presence, especially if the recipient happens to be our parents.
This 100-second Amazon commercial shows a mother-daughter duo who haven’t seen each other in quite a while after the daughter gets married. But on Diwali, she decides to pay her mother a surprise visit and gift her a Kindle device as she is fond of books. However, when she meets her mother, she doesn’t even bother opening her gift because she just can’t get her eyes off her real gift i.e., her daughter!
2. Vivo: #JoyOfHomeComing
What is Diwali without the people who are closest to your heart? Well, thanks to today’s highly connected world, we can stay in touch with our loved ones even if we happen to be in the remotest corners of the planet. But nothing beats the charm of being physically present, right? That is exactly what this Vivo commercial tends to highlight!
The ad showcases a man struggling with the dilemma of going to the US for a managerial program and missing his newlyborn daughter’s first Diwali. Torn between his personal life and professional calling, he eventually decides to come back to his family and spend Diwali with them. After all, a US trip could never be more important than an ‘us moment’.
3. Mamaearth: #GoodnessMakesYouBeautiful
More than the festivities, Diwali is about bringing a smile to someone’s face. And that is what Mamaearth tends to showcase through this 90-second commercial.
The ad showcases different people, all doing their bit, to make Diwali memorable for someone else. And why not, after all, Diwali is more than just a celebration, it's about spreading love and sharing kindness. You see, the beauty of Diwali, or any other festival for that matter, isn’t in the festival itself but the the little acts of kindness that we all perform to mark the celebrations.
4. HP: #ChaloRoshniKiOar
In case you don’t know, Diwali involves paying obeisance to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. That’s precisely why Diwali is also associated with happiness and success. And HP, the American manufacturer of software and computer services, perfectly summed up this belief through this commercial.
The ad showcases an elderly couple, Santosh & Janaki, who had together established a handicrafts shop about forty years ago with a shared dream. But the shop, Sajan Handicrafts, hasn’t been doing well lately and the couple find themselves constrained to sell it off. And that’s when their lives are enlightened by Lakshmi, the granddaughter of Roopa, Janaki’s friend. Lakshmi helps Janaki bring their shop on the digital map and soon their shop witnesses a massive turnaround in its fortune.
Just like Goddess Lakshmi, the young girl also brings joy, prosperity, and abundance to the couple’s life.
5. Mr DIY: Maya’s Unspoken Wish
And here’s my favorite Diwali ad from this year. And no, it isn’t an Indian commercial but comes directly from the Malaysian retail company, Mr DIY.
The ad showcases a schoolgirl Maya visiting the barber to get a massive tuft of her hair cut. The barber does so even though Maya doesn’t have enough money to pay him up. We later find out that Maya got her hair cut to donate her tuft to cancer patients. That was Maya’s way of spreading the light of hope to others.
