5 Funny 2022 Commercials That Were in Complete Contrast to How The year Was

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

2022 has finally come to an end. And we have already discussed how awful the year has been. If a major war, crypto market crash, human rights violations over anti-hijab protests, and acute climate crisis weren’t already enough, the world was further traumatized by the assassination of the former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and Roger Federer’s goodbye to tennis.

But not everything was gloomy, after all. Qatar hosted what would be known as one of the most expensive and best football world cups ever, an Asian became the prime minister of the UK, and Messi finally has a World Cup in his closet! Also, brands did everything in their power to keep everyone cheerful during these testing times by dishing out some of the funniest commercials that you’d ever see.

So, for this week’s #FunnyFridays, we have got for you the 5 funniest commercials from 2022. Have a look.

1. Lay’s: Stay Golden

You know the ad is going to be funny when you see two incredibly, funny and likable comedians in it. Just like the crisp, salty, and irresistible snack the two are advertising, this ad about Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen’s golden memories is light and tasty.

The commercial shows the hilarious experiences that the duo has been previously part of together, including a near-death experience in a plane crash, being kidnapped by a stalker, and purchasing a haunted house. And while they have starred in quite a few movies together, Rudd hasn’t seen any of them, according to this ad. So, maybe it’s time Rudd finally finds out what magic they can together weave.

2. FTX: Don’t Be Like Larry

It’s not easy to sell a product if you get it promoted by someone who doesn’t even believe in your product in the first place. But this FTX commercial featuring Larry David sold like hotcakes.

The cryptocurrency exchange did a remarkable job by roping in the legendary cynic who is portrayed as the guy who doubted the potential of some of the most remarkable human achievements since the beginning of time. Be it the wheel, the lightbulb, space travel, or democracy itself- Larry didn’t see much potential in any of these. And when Larry dismisses crypto in this FTX commercial, the exchange basically promoted itself in a roundabout way.

But considering how haywire everything went for the crypto industry within weeks after this commercial was released, I’d say Larry got it right, at least this time!

3. BMW: Zeus & Hera

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who once played Hercules in a rather forgettable 1970 movie, returns to his Hellenistic roots to play Zeus along with Salma Hayek as Hera in this hilarious BMW ad.

The ad sees Zeus hanging his boots and coming to earth to spend his post-retirement days. And without really disappointing anyone, Zeus slowly goes back to his old ways of using his powers on ordinary people, albeit to help them. However, the drudgery of human life soon catches up with him, and just when he wants to call it quits, Hera walks along with something that can match his powers and keep him entertained. Watch the ad for Arnold and Salma Hayek singing Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” as they take the ad to Mount Olympus of 2022 commercials.

4. BIC: The Ultimate Lighter

Snoop Dogg features in this sly, tongue-in-cheek ad for BIC EZ Reach lighters along with Martha Stewart, where she is seen extolling the virtues of a lengthy lighter.

From citing the use of a long-reach lighter to light candles and campfires to preparing a barbeque fire, the two constantly talk about its benefits. And all this while Snoop Dogg, through his mere presence, reminds you what else you can use a long lighter for.

5. Amazon Alexa: Mind Reader

What if Alexa took commands by reading one’s mind? Well, ask Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost as they deal with a mind-reading Alexa in this hilarious commercial.

The commercial shows Alexa spilling the beans on Colin’s plans to fake his death on the day of his wife’s show, Scarlett’s lie about what she feels about her love-making scenes with hot actors, and Colin’s forgetful nature. In short, it’s a 90-second spot about how AI could wreck your life if it were to have a mind of its own. But even that, I guess, would be insanely funny.

Wrapping Up

And that was a wrap of another segment of #FunnyFridays. The past year was full of funny ads and hopefully, we’ll get to see much more this year.

We’ll be back with more hilarious commercials for you. Till then, stay tuned!
