5 Hilarious CNY 2023 Ads That Will Help You Get Over the New Year Hangover

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

I promise this will be the last time you’ll hear anything from us about the Chinese New Year this season. But you just can’t get enough of CNY ads, especially if they are as amazing as the ones that we are about to discuss in this blog. If like me you’re also missing the festivities of the Chinese New Year, then this blog is for you.

So, brace yourself as we bring to you some of the funniest CNY 2023 ads for this week’s #FunnyFridays segment.

1. Pizza Hut: The Ooooooooong-est Thing

You know the ad is going to be hilarious when you see Auntie Siow in it. But what do you do when you face competition from other businesses in your locality? Well, you get them to join forces with you- or vice versa.

Pizza Hut’s CNY 2023 ad is about two mandarin orange sellers who start losing their customers when a stall opposite them devises an innovative way to sell pizzas. Instead of selling the traditional round-shaped pizzas, Auntie Siow starts making super long rectangular-shaped pizzas, which is proven to invite extra “ong” for the Chinese New Year season.

What’s more, they even join hands to sell their ooooooooong-est pizza in this hilarious 255-second spot.

2. Air Selangor: It Takes Tu

We have already seen how the generational gap can make it difficult for people to bond in Milo’s CNY 2023 advert. Air Selangor’s CNY 2023 ad revolves around this premise, except with more hilarious consequences.

The ad shows an old woman and her granddaughter having difficulty getting along. But once they drink a cup of magical water, their souls are swapped into each other’s bodies and they finally realize what it is to be the other person. The moment where the ad rewinds to the scene where the grandfather is shown taking a dump in the washroom doubled me up with laughter😂

3. redONE: It’s The Thought That Counts

What could possibly go wrong when you’re about to host your mother-in-law for the first Chinese New Year after your wedding? Well, you never know, maybe burnt food?

The ad shows newly-wed Michelle trying to impress her mother-in-law by attempting to bake pineapple tarts from scratch. But her lack of experience results in the tarts getting burnt in the oven. When her husband’s family finally comes over to celebrate the new year with them, the smell of the burnt tarts is all that her mother-in-law could focus on.

Well, I can’t really say what the brand was trying to endorse-.pick up a phone and order pineapple tarts from outside with redONE’s plans?

4. Cetaphil: Radiant Skin for a Prosperous Year Ahead

Have you ever heard of the term “swayamvara”? It’s an ancient Indian method where a woman chooses a man as her husband from a group of suitors. This ad by Cetaphil is based on the same method, except that a 30-year-old man(child) chooses her wife from a group of girls.

From the blatant product placement to the red, blotchy skin on the actors, everything about this ad is ridiculously over the top. The scenes where the aunties point out skin flaws and recommend products to fix them are some of the most in-your-face marketing tactics that you would see, which is why this ad seems so insanely hilarious.

But the highlight of the ad was that the product even turned the manchild into a handsome fellow😂

5. Nestle Malaysia: Meeting the In-Laws

Listening to your wife is probably the best thing that you could do in your life, especially if you have crazy, kung-fu-loving in-laws.

The ad by Nestle Malaysia shows how Nestle’s lively tea could infuse energy into even the most subdued souls. The scenes where the poor husband gets slapped around by her wife’s menacingly inquisitive aunties and fleeced by the three children for angpow would make you want to take pity on the poor lad and laugh at his situation at the same time.

Wrapping Up

And that was a wrap of yet another #FunnyFridays segment. CNY ads are always amazing and the best thing about most of them is that they have the element of humor in plenty. Well, it really isn’t a new year until you welcome it with laughter, right?

We’ll be back with more awesome commercials for you. Till then, stay tuned!
