The 17th Summer Paralympic Games is here and so are the Paralympics 2024 commercials. Set to take place in Paris between 28th August- 8th September, the Paralympics will see over 4400 athletes competing in 549 events across 22 sports. The Paralympics have always been viewed as the ultimate testament to the sheer grit and resilience that we see people demonstrating throughout their lives, except that they channel it via some sport at the world’s biggest stage for athletes with disabilities. But if you have been following our blogs, you probably already know this from our previous blog on the best Paralympic commercials.
So, without wasting any more time, let’s dive straight into these 5 best Paralympic 2024 commercials that will make you rethink what’s possible.
1. Nike: Winning is Winning
Nike has gone into a complete badass mode this Olympics and Paralympics. While it launched the “Am I a Bad Person” campaign for the Olympics focusing on the eccentricities found common in the world’s biggest sporting champions, this campaign goes hard on the Paralympians.
The message is simple- you aren’t a winner until you win! Yes, this 30-second spot mocks the notion that Paralympians are winners and need to be celebrated just because they are participating in the Paralympics. But as the Italian fencer Beatrice Vio puts it- winning is winning!
Honestly, I feel that Paralympians need to be appreciated for their efforts but let’s not just view their potential through the disability lens. They have it in them to do the impossible and outperform everyone as we’ll see in the next ad!
2. Orange: When You Love Sport, You Love Sport
How often do you see a Paralympian outperform an Olympian? Not too often, right? But when they do, they make the entire world sit up and take notice.
Telecom brand Orange launched this wonderful 100-second spot that shows that the greatest performances aren’t always where you expect them to be. The advert juxtaposes the men’s T13 1500m final at the 2016 Olympic Games with the Paralympic Games from the same year wherein Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka not only won the Gold medal but also finished the race 1.71 seconds faster than Michael Centrowitz, who won gold on the same track during the Olympic Games three weeks previously.
That’s precisely why I said previously that merely participating isn’t enough, because they are better than that and that’s what the Paralympic Committee tried portraying in the next advert.
3. International Paralympic Committee: The Paralympic Dream
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about Paralympic Games? Perhaps a joyous sporting event that can help people with disabilities come together? Well, that’s exactly the kind of notion that the International Paralympic Committee wants people to get away from!
This 70-second spot by the International Paralympic Committee debunks the myths about Paralympians in the most fun way possible. The advert begins with animations of Paralympians having a jolly time together. But the beautiful, relaxed animated scene suddenly changes to a high-contrast shot of someone being kicked to the floor.
The Paralympics is a show of world-class athleticism that treats the audience to some of the most edge-of-the-seat competitions. This advert is just a glimpse of it!
4. Channel 4: Considering What?
No matter how amazingly well a Paralympian performs, people often tend to get condescending toward them and bring up their disabilities, which diminishes their accomplishments in one way or another.
But does sport really care about disability? No, it doesn’t just like friction, time, and gravity don’t! That’s the message behind this 140-second advert by Channel 4. The ad urges people to appreciate Paralympians for who they are: world-class athletes and nothing less. And rightly so- after all, they have the same advantages and disadvantages as their opponents and they don’t have it easy.
5. Canadian Paralympic Team: Greatness Moves Us
And here’s the last commercial on this list of the best Paralympics 2024 commercials. While this advert is not as great as the other four, it is surely inspiring and quite energetic.
The 60-second spot celebrates the pursuit of greatness in its many forms, tracing the journey of athletes from their earliest dreams to the pinnacle of the world stage. The a also features footage from significant moments in Canadian Para sports history, shining a spotlight on athletes like Marissa Papaconstantinou, Aurelie Rivard, Nate Reich, Brent Lakatos, and many others.
Wrapping Up
And that was a wrap of some of the best Paralympics 2024 commercials. The Paralympic Games are a true testament to what can be achieved through sheer determination and willpower. And the ads covered in this blog showcase just that.
