Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Announces New Personalization Elements for Meta AI

Meta’s looking to enhance its AI assistant with new memory features, that will give it more capacity to recall and refine its responses based on your personal preferences.

Meta is building in more personal tracking tools to customize your Meta AI responses. So, for example, if you tell the chatbot that you’re vegan, it will remember that in future, and only recommend vegan recipes. Meta is also enabling recall from your Facebook and IG profiles for further customization. Meta said that it began rolling out this new update in the last week of 2024.

2. TikTok Launches Automated Ad Campaign Creation for UK Retailers

TikTok has launched the next stage of its in-app shopping push in the U.K., with a new offering called “GMV Max”, which utilizes AI to optimize your product listings in the app.

Essentially, GMV Max will handle your product advertising process, by sourcing assets, creating ad campaigns, and optimizing for sales with incremental GMV that would not otherwise be attainable, in order to keep GMV to ad spend ratio stable. It’s an end-to-end ad creation system, which aims to make it easier than ever for brands to list their products in the app, and maximize sales to TikTok users.

3. Perplexity AI Updates Its Offer for TikTok US

Perplexity AI has revised its takeover offer for TikTok U.S., with a new proposal that could hold more appeal to the Trump administration.

The proposal, which would create a new entity combining Perplexity and TikTok U.S., would now also allow for the U.S. government to own up to 50% of the new company upon a future IPO. Earlier in the month, as part of his victory tour in the lead-up to Inauguration Day, Trump announced that he planned to organize a joint venture with China to keep TikTok available in the U.S. Trump didn’t offer a lot of detail of his plan, but noted that the U.S. would end up owning 50% of TikTok, with China’s ByteDance presumably retaining its own half of the app.

4. Instagram Adds Transparency Labels to Business Chats

After rolling out business chats tags in Messenger last August, Meta’s now also implementing the same on Instagram, with the new labels now being rolled out in the app.

Business chats on Instagram will now include a “Business Chat” label in the top title bar, while there’s also a new “Business chats and Your privacy” shortcut link. When tapped, this will display a second explainer screen. That’ll add additional transparency to your in-stream conversations, and ensure greater awareness around conversations with commercial entities, and how such data can subsequently be used.

5. Instagram Launches Teen Accounts in Singapore With Enhanced Safety Features

Instagram has started rolling out Teen Accounts in Singapore. The feature comes with built-in protections that will limit who can contact the teens and the content they see on the app.

These accounts on the Meta-owned app will also be private by default, and teenagers can only be tagged by people they follow. Offensive words and phrases will be filtered out, said Meta. Teens will also get notifications telling them to leave the app after 60 minutes each day. There are also additional parental supervision tools that allow parents to see who their teen is messaging.

6. Snapchat Launches New Incentives for AR Developers

Snapchat’s launching a new way for AR creators to monetize their efforts, while it’s also looking to help students get into AR, via a new pricing model for its AR Spectacles.

As part of this, Snapchat is rolling out a new initiative called “Challenge Tags” which will offer cash prizes to AR developers based on the originality, technical excellence, and theme focus of their work. Through this new Challenge process, Snapchat will be able to guide AR creators on the types of Lenses that it wants them to create, which could enable Snap to keep creators focused on key engagement trends and shifts, while also keeping more new experiences flowing into its app.

Snapchat is also looking to encourage more students to get involved in AR creation, by announcing student pricing for access to its AR Spectacles.

7. LinkedIn Updates ‘Top Voice’ Badge Requirements

LinkedIn is updating its "Top Voice" blue badge program to encourage continued engagement on the platform. This follows the removal of its gold “Top Voice” badges, previously tied to contributions to Collaborative Articles, last September. Under the new system, recipients of the blue "Top Voice" badge will hold the title for a six-month period, after which LinkedIn will review their activity before deciding on renewal. Previously, blue badge holders retained the designation indefinitely.
