Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.
1. Meta Announces 2025 Connect and LlamaCon Conferences
Meta has announced the date of its 2025 Connect conference, where it will showcase all of its latest developments in AR, VR, wearables, and more. Also this year, it will be holding its first-ever AI conference with “LlamaCon” in April.

Meta has been hard at work developing its Llama AI models, which are industry-leading in many respects. And with Meta also working to drastically expand its processing capacity, and facilitate greater connectivity in its apps to power the next generation of AI projects, its Llama models may well end up being the industry leader before the year is out.
Meta says that it’ll share the latest on its open source AI developments at LlamaCon, with specialized events and meet-ups designed to guide developers in tapping into its AI models.
2. Meta Expands Support for Third-Party Ad Placement Blocklists
Meta is looking to give advertisers more control over their ad placements, via an expansion of its support for third-party blocklists.

Blocklists created by brand safety and measurement providers make it easier for brands to ensure that their ads are not displayed next to potentially disagreeable content, while also taking out the manual effort of searching and excluding certain profiles and/or categories themselves.
Meta announced initial support for blocklists from partner provider IAS last October, and now, it’s expanding that to include blocklists from DoubleVerify and Zefr as well.
3. Meta Launches Largest Subsea Cable Project in History
After undertaking initial research on the project late last year, Meta’s has now officially announced its latest subsea cable initiative, with this one set to be its largest connective effort yet.

Meta’s newest project is called “Waterworth” and will eventually connect five major continents, and span over 50,000 km, making it the world’s longest subsea cable project. As per Meta, Project Waterworth will bring industry-leading connectivity to the U.S., India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions. This project will enable greater economic cooperation, facilitate digital inclusion, and open opportunities for technological development in these regions.
4. Facebook Livestreams Will Now Be Removed After 30 Days
Meta has made a change to its storage time for livestream broadcasts, in order to reduce its costs in maintaining video data. Starting 19th February, any livestream older than 30 days will soon be removed from the app. Previously these videos were stored indefinitely.

However, there will be email and app notifications that go out before your archive is completely deleted. Once you get the notice, you’ll have 90 days to download or transfer the videos. Facebook plans to delete old broadcast recordings in waves over the coming months.
5. TikTok Adds ‘Most-Loved’ Tag for Popular Shop Items
TikTok is looking to highlight top-rated products for sale in the app with the addition of a new “Most Loved” tag on popular products.

TikTok’s Most Loved tag will be displayed on items that have been well-received by other TikTok users. The tags are much like your regular star ratings, though they’re more specifically reserved for top products, based on user feedback. TikTok says that a range of measurables will factor into its Most Loved badge allocations, including star ratings, but also return rates, shipping times, and overall customer service feedback. As such, users can help to improve the shopping experience for others if they leave feedback on their purchased items.
6. Instagram Tests Comment Downvotes To Combat Negative Interactions
Meta is trying out a dislike button for comments on Instagram, in the hopes of establishing more signals that it can use to downrank comments that users find to be overly negative and/or harmful to their in-app experience.

Some Instagram users are now seeing a new downvote arrow to the right of the comment functions, which they can tap to signal that they don’t like a particular remark.users are now seeing a new downvote arrow to the right of the comment functions, which they can tap to signal that they don’t like a particular remark. Back in 2018, Meta tried out downvotes on Facebook comments with some users, with the same purpose in mind, in highlighting overly negative replies.
7. Meta Launches Teen Accounts on Instagram in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific
Meta is launching an Instagram service for users aged under 16 in Hong Kong and the rest of the Asia-Pacific, with the international technology company saying the new system will require a parent or guardian to oversee their child’s account.

The feature has already been launched in some parts of the world, including in Australia, the United States and Canada since September last year. The new protections require a parent or guardian to be assigned as an account handler, allowing adults to oversee their child’s online interactions, content consumption and time spent on the platform.
8. Snapchat Reports India Is a Key Driver of AR Usage and Development
Snapchat has reported that India is now its key growth market for AR creators, with India’s AR developer community growing by over 50% in two years.

Snapchat made the announcement at its annual India AR Day event in Mumbai, where it also shared that Indian AR developers now create the highest number of AR Lenses in the app. Lenses have become a key usage option for Indian Snapchatters, with over 85% of local users engaging with the app’s digital overlays and effects. That’s opened up new opportunities for local developers and enthusiasts, which has also given Snap the opportunity to tap into a broader range of creative talent.
9. xAI Lanches Grok 3 AI Model To Compete With Industry Leaders
X has announced the launch of its latest AI model, with Grok 3, which was reportedly trained on 200,000 GPUs, now live for some users.

The latest Grok model has more than 10x the compute power of the previous offering, which X says puts it ahead of competitors in several key benchmarks. According to X, Grok 3 outperforms Gemini-2 Pro, DeepSeek-V3, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and GPT-4o, on several key tasks, including math, science, and coding. The xAI team says that Grok 3 also outperforms the competition in general reasoning as well. If true, this could be a big boost for X’s AI ambitions, with the Grok team able to create a competitive AI system in much less time than other projects.
